This paper offers a contrastive analysis of the indefinite determiners other
and otro, when they are combined with the definitive article and the forms
of the demonstrative pronouns. The deictic and anaphoric references of the
latter are discussed and contrasted with those of the former. Attention is
also given to else and its equivalents in Spanish that postmodify abstract
pronouns with personal and non personal reference and a small number of
adverbs and quantifiers. They are restricted to this context and replace
other and otro. Our anaysis also includes a short discussion of the indefinite
determiner demás, normally preceded by the definite article, and its
equivalents in English; they alternate with other and otro but always with
a more restricted use and meaning.
