La vocación de las mujeres y su presencia en el área STEM.

Abstract

Nuestra sociedad lleva años demandando una igualdad real entre mujeres y hombres. Es cierto que en muchos ámbitos de nuestras vidas hemos abrazado esta igualdad, comprendiendo y asimilando los cambios y progresos que ello conlleva. Sin embargo, muchas otras esferas sociales se muestran reacias a ser cómplices en la consecución de este reto vital. El área STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, por sus siglas en inglés) representa uno de los grandes rivales de las mujeres que, como profesionales, han visto frustrada su vocación y desarrollo profesional en este ámbito. Muchos años han sido testigos de las cuantiosas injusticias y barreras con las que las mujeres se han tenido que topar para conseguir sus objetivos, y en múltiples ocasiones ni siquiera ha sido posible llegar a ellos. Aún hoy las mujeres siguen desafiando estos impedimentos que perpetúan su infravaloración, subrepresentación e incluso invisibilización en el ámbito STEM. Por esta razón, este trabajo persigue visibilizar esta situación, repasando las múltiples razones y sucesos que han contribuido a su perdurabilidad. Además, se plantean nuevos interrogantes sobre la dirección y el sentido que deben seguir las acciones que se están impulsando para aplacar este fenómeno aparentemente inalterable

Our society has been demanding real equality between women and men for years. It is a fact that in many areas of our lives we have embraced this equality, understanding and assimilating the changes and progress that it entails. However, many other social spheres are reluctant to be complicit in achieving this vital challenge. The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) area represents one of the great rivals of women who, as professionals, have been frustrated in their vocation and professional development in this field. Many years have witnessed many injustices and barriers that women have had to face in order to achieve their goals, and sometimes it has not even been possible to reach them. Even today, women continue to challenge these impediments that perpetuate their undervaluation, underrepresentation and even invisibility in the STEM field. For this reason, this paper aims to make this situation visible, reviewing the multiple reasons and events that have contributed to its perpetuation. It also raises new questions about the direction that must be taken in order to placate this apparently unalterable phenomenon.
