Palabras clave: educación física, innovación educativa, modelos pedagógicos, motivación, educación secundaria There is a significant interest in physical education in working with increasingly innovative
pedagogical models, based on autonomy, social relations and student competencies, to the detriment
of traditional methodologies focused on the teacher's protagonism. The purpose of the study was to
identify the incidence of the application of a hybridization of Sport Education and Teaching Game
for Understanding (SE-TGfU) teaching models in the support of the students' basic psychological
needs (BPN), as well as the advantages and disadvantages that the use of this type of methodologies generates for the teacher. The intervention is focused on a group of 29 students of 4th ESO, in a learning situation oriented to soccer during 6 sessions. For its assessment, the Basic Psychological Needs Measurement Scale (BPNES) Vlachopoulos and Michailidou (2006) was used; the
development of concept maps as an initial and final assessment of declarative learning, which allow
visualizing its evolution; and a structured self-report of the teacher to identify the perceived
advantages and disadvantages. With respect to BPN, the results reflect increases in items related to autonomy and competence, especially in female students. The use of innovative models in physical education that are committed to an emancipatory teaching process has resulted in an increase in
support for NPB and declarative learning. The teacher points out as the main advantage the ability to
work autonomously in a group, discovering and associating new concepts; and as the most relevant disadvantage the need for many sessions for students to adapt to the dynamics of the models.
