2018Abstract
Cerebral palsy (CP) in children is a neuromotor disorder that causes abnormal postural patterns, movement and coordination dysfunctions, and an alteration of the ability to regulate muscle tone. The principal aim of this assignment is to determine the effectiveness of aquatic therapies in the treatment of children with CP based on the existing literature. For this purpose, a bibliographic review has been carried out in the PubMed, PEDro, Scopus, WOS and EBSCOHost databases. To fulfill this research, "cerebral palsy", "CP", "children", "childhood", "hydrotherapy", "aquatic therapy", "aquatic exercise", "aquatic intervention", "physiotherapy" and "rehabilitation" were used as descriptors. The selection criteria established were studies published in English or Spanish, relating to the last ten years, where the main treatment was aquatic therapy, with samples that include more than 5 people, patients diagnosed with CP under 21 years of age, being selected a total of 7 articles. The different aquatic therapies included warm-up, stretching and cool down periods, all of which were mainly based on aerobic exercises. The conclusions of this research reflect that aquatic therapy can be beneficial for children with CP since it generates improvements in gross motor function, range of motion and muscle tone. However, in some cases, the benefits obtained with this therapy do not differ from those obtained with non-aquatic therapies. Therefore, new studies with longer intervention periods and a larger number of participants are necessary.
